To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place - Elliott Enwitt -

There are quite a number of rules when it comes to taking "The perfect picture"

For example:

  • The rule of thirds

  • Leading Lines

  • Frame within a frame

  • Filling the frame

  • Diagonal lines

  • and many many more.....

As a photographer it is good to learn and experiment with these rules, however, I feel it is just as important to not get too stressed or overwhelmed by them when taking a photograph. What you see as the photographer is important and this is what one should focus on.

Having said this, some of the rules are worth keeping at the back of the mind when approaching an image. If for instance you are trying to bring somebody's eye to a particular area within the photograph than diagonal or leading lines are very effective. Another example would be framing your focal point within a frame which can help bring the viewers eye where you want it.

Below is an example of "Filling the Frame". In this photograph I wanted all of the image to be the central focus and not have any background or fore ground distracting the viewer. I have also used the diagonal lines, bringing the eye from the top left corner through the picture to the bottom right.
